Not everyone is a candidate
These medications are not appropriate for everyone. They are generally contraindicated for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). GLP-1 medications and other peptides carry real risks and potential side effects, ranging from common and mild (nausea, digestive changes, injection-site reactions) to rare and serious (pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, allergic reactions, and — per FDA boxed warnings for GLP-1 medications — a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rodent studies, of uncertain relevance to humans).
